Dryers in city units
Plenty of Wollongong apartments have no outdoor line, and strata rules in many blocks discourage washing hung over the balcony rail. That leaves the dryer doing every load, every week. The machines we see in units are worked much harder than a dryer in a house with a backyard, and it shows in worn drum rollers, stretched belts and heaters that have cooked themselves on lint.
Airflow is behind most of it. A lint filter that is cleaned now and then, rather than every load, lets lint through to the heater and the thermal cut-out. Once the cut-out trips, the drum still turns and the clothes stay damp. Replacing the cut-out without fixing the airflow only buys a few weeks.
Heat pump and condenser models
Newer blocks were often fitted with heat pump dryers because they need no vent. They have a second filter or a condenser that owners do not know about, and when it is clogged the cycles get longer and longer. A wet floor under a condenser dryer usually means a full water tank, a blocked drain hose or a failed condensate pump.
Stacked over the washer
In a lot of city laundries the dryer sits on a stacking kit above the washing machine. That saves floor space but makes the dryer harder to reach, and the vibration from the washer's spin cycle travels up into it. Loose stacking brackets, a dryer that walks forward and a door that no longer lines up are all signs the kit needs tightening. We repair stacked dryers in place in most cases, and if the dryer has to come down, the technician brings what is needed to do it safely.
Cost
A dryer assessment in Wollongong is $125, and the quote comes before any work. The vans carry belts, rollers and common thermostats.
