A freezer that quits is one of the few appliance faults with a clock on it, because a full load of food is only good for so long once the cold starts slipping. Whether it is a chest freezer in the garage, an upright, or the freezer half of a combo fridge, the faults tend to sort into a few groups. Here is how to read what yours is doing.
Running hard but not getting cold
If you can hear the compressor going and the freezer still won't hold temperature, the cold is being made but not moved or held. The two usual suspects are dust-caked condenser coils and a stalled evaporator fan.
The coils at the back or underneath shed heat, and when they fur up with dust and lint the whole system struggles. Pull the freezer out, switch it off, and vacuum the coils, since that alone revives plenty of tired units. The evaporator fan is the one that pushes cold air around inside. If it has iced up or its motor has failed, the compressor runs flat out while the cabinet slowly warms. A fan that has gone silent, or a freezer that is cold up top and warm at the bottom, points that way, and it is a repair rather than a clean.
Frost packing up inside
A frost-free freezer that is growing a wall of ice has a defrost fault. These machines melt off the coil frost on a timed cycle, and when the defrost heater, timer, or thermostat fails, the ice just keeps building until it blocks the airflow and the temperature climbs.
Before you assume the worst, check the door seal. A gasket that is torn, or no longer grabbing all the way round, lets warm room air in and frost forms fast. Close the door on a sheet of paper and try to pull it out: if it slides free easily, the seal has given up. Manual-defrost chest freezers are different and simply need defrosting by hand before the ice gets past about 6mm.
Temperature swings and odd noises
Ice cream that goes rock hard then soft, or items with freezer burn, usually means the thermostat or the defrost cycle is not holding a steady temperature. A freezer should sit around minus 18 degrees. As for noises, some hum and gurgle is normal, but a loud buzz often means the fan is catching ice, and a clicking that comes with no cooling can be the compressor's start relay. Safe checks before you call
- Vacuum the condenser coils at the back or underneath.
- Do the paper test on the door seal all the way round.
- Make sure vents inside aren't blocked by packed-in food.
- Defrost a manual chest freezer if the ice is over 6mm.
