Oven not playing along
An oven that will not heat, or heats badly, has a way of announcing itself right when you have a roast in and people coming over. Most oven faults come down to a short list of parts, and knowing which one is misbehaving is half the job.
We repair electric and gas ovens, wall ovens and freestanding upright stoves across the Illawarra and South Coast, on brands like Westinghouse, Smeg, Electrolux and Omega. We have been at it for four decades, and we come to you.
Common oven faults
No heat at all. On an electric oven the bake or grill element is the first suspect. When an element fails it often shows a blister, a split or a burnt spot, and sometimes it fails with a small flash and a tripped safety switch. Elements are a bread-and-butter repair. Fan-forced but not fan-forced. If the oven bakes on conventional but the fan-forced setting is cold, the fan element (the ring element behind the back panel) has usually gone, not the visible bake element.
Cooking unevenly or at the wrong temperature. One side burns, the other stays pale, or everything takes far longer than the dial says. That is typically the thermostat or the temperature sensor drifting out of calibration. It is worth confirming with an oven thermometer before assuming the worst.
Turns on but does nothing, or the clock is flashing. A lot of ovens will not start an element until the time-of-day clock is set. A blank or flashing clock after a power cut can be the whole problem. Beyond that it points to the control board or a failed selector switch.
Door and seal issues. A dropped door, a worn hinge or a perished door seal lets heat escape, which shows up as slow cooking and a hot kitchen. Hinges and seals are straightforward to replace.
Safe checks before you call
- Set the clock. If the clock display is flashing, set the time of day and try the oven again. Free fix, and a common one.
- Look at the element. With the oven off and cold, check the bake and grill elements for a visible break, blister or bright burnt patch.
- Test the other functions. Work out exactly what does and does not work. Bake dead but grill fine, or fan-forced cold but conventional hot, tells us which part to bring.
- Check the temperature with a thermometer. Set 180 and see what an oven thermometer actually reads after it settles. A big gap means the thermostat or sensor.
Gas ovens
Gas work is different. Any repair that touches the gas side of an oven or stove has to be done by an appropriately licensed technician, and in NSW that is a legal requirement, not a preference. You can read the gasfitter licensing rules on the NSW Government site if you want the detail. We work within our licensing, we do not cut corners on gas, and we will tell you plainly what is and is not ours to touch.
Booking a technician
If the element has gone, the temperature is out, or the oven simply will not respond, book us in. The technician diagnoses the fault on site and quotes the repair before starting, so there are no surprises. Many manufacturers also publish model-specific troubleshooting, for example Fisher & Paykel's Australian support pages, which can help you describe the symptom when you call. If you have a matching cooktop acting up as well, we cover cooktops too and can look at both in the one visit.
