Rangehood gone quiet, or gone weak
A rangehood earns its keep by pulling steam, smoke and grease off the cooktop and out of the kitchen. When it stops doing that, you notice it fast: the kitchen holds the smell of last night's dinner, the windows fog up, and a film of grease creeps onto the cupboards.
Before you assume the motor has died, it is worth knowing that most "weak rangehood" calls are not a motor at all. They are filters.
We repair rangehood motors, lights and controls across the Illawarra and South Coast on the brands that turn up in local kitchens, Smeg, Omega, Westinghouse and Fisher & Paykel among them.
What actually goes wrong
Weak extraction. The fan runs but barely shifts anything. The overwhelming cause is clogged grease filters, followed by a blocked outlet flap. A genuinely worn motor is further down the list than most people expect. Clean the filters first and you often get your suction back for nothing.
Motor humming or dead. If the fan hums but will not spin, or is dead across every speed, that is the motor or its capacitor. This is a real repair and where we come in.
Lights out. Rangehood lighting runs off halogen, LED or older incandescent, sometimes through a transformer or driver. When the light dies it can be the globe, the driver or the switch, and it is worth ruling out the easy one before assuming the worst.
Controls not responding. Touch panels and push-button switches both fail over time in a hot, greasy spot right above the stove. Speed settings that stick, do nothing, or change on their own point to the control board or the switch.
Rattle or vibration. Usually worn motor bearings, a loose mounting, or a fan wheel caked unevenly with grease. Worth chasing early, because a rattling fan wheel out of balance wears the bearings faster.
What to do before you call
- Pull the filters and degrease them. Aluminium mesh and stainless baffle filters both come out by hand. Soak them in hot water with a good squirt of dishwashing liquid, or run mesh filters through the dishwasher. CHOICE has a solid step-by-step on cleaning a rangehood and its filters. Do this every few weeks if you cook a lot, and half the "repair" calls disappear.
- Check the outlet flap. On a ducted hood, the flap where the duct leaves the wall or roof can stick shut with grease. If it will not open, air has nowhere to go.
- Try each speed and the light separately. Work out exactly what responds and what does not, so we know whether we are chasing a motor, a switch or a light.
Salt air on the coast
If you are anywhere near the beach, from the northern villages like Thirroul down the coast, salt in the air is hard on exposed steel. It corrodes rangehood grilles and speeds up wear on outdoor and alfresco units. It is not magic and it is not a sales line, it just means catching the fault and replacing the worn part a bit sooner.
