A dead washing machine backs up a household in a day, and the laundromat gets old fast. Most of what stops a machine is mechanical and predictable, and a couple of the faults are things you can clear yourself in ten minutes with a towel down.
We repair front and top loaders on every major brand across the Illawarra and South Coast, from Fisher & Paykel and LG to Bosch, Asko and Electrolux. A family business, forty-odd years in.
The faults behind most calls
Clothes come out sopping wet. The machine has failed to drain, failed to spin, or both, and the two go together because most machines will not spin until the water is gone. A blocked drain pump filter is behind more of these calls than any other single fault, and it is one you can clear yourself. We laid out the full check-by-check in what to do when a washer won't drain or spin.
Water on the laundry floor. Leaks come from a handful of places: the door boot seal on a front loader, a loose or perished hose clamp, the pump housing, or the detergent drawer. Working out where the water is actually coming from narrows it down fast, and we walk through that in tracing a washing machine leak.
Banging, grinding or walking across the floor. A machine that thumps hard on spin or grinds like a coffee mill usually has worn drum bearings. On a new machine, it can simply be the transport bolts left in from delivery. Either way it is worth acting on, because worn bearings only get worse and can take the drum with them.
Smells musty even when clean. Front loaders trap water and residue in the door seal and the drum, and it turns. This one is almost always maintenance rather than a fault, and our guide to clearing the smell out of a front loader sorts most cases without a service call.
Stops mid-cycle or will not start. A faulty door lock, a water level sensor, or a control board fault can halt a machine part-way, often with an error code on the display.
What to check before booking
- Redistribute the load. A doona or a bunched-up load thrown to one side stops a machine spinning up to speed. Even it out and run a spin.
- Clean the drain pump filter. On a front loader it sits behind a small flap at the bottom front. Towel and a shallow tray down first, unscrew it, and clear out the lint, coins and hair clips. This is the single most common fix.
- Check the hoses. Look behind the machine for a kinked or blocked drain hose, and make sure it has not been shoved too far down the standpipe.
- Run a maintenance wash. For smells, a hot empty cycle with the door seal wiped out clears most of it.
The pump, the motor, the bearings, the door lock and the control board are where DIY stops. They involve water, electricity and moving parts, and the wrong move turns a small fault into an expensive one.
When to hand it over
If the machine still will not drain or spin after clearing the filter, or it is leaking, grinding or throwing error codes, book us in. A technician diagnoses the fault on site and quotes the repair before starting, so you can decide with real numbers whether to fix or replace. If you are weighing that up, clothes washers carry an Energy Rating Label covering both energy and water use, and an old thirsty machine adds up over a year. On an older model it is also worth a look at the product safety recalls list, as a few washer models have been recalled over the years.
