Calderwood is one of the biggest new communities in the Illawarra, a master-planned estate on former farmland north-west of Albion Park that is still filling in. That is the thing to know about a new estate. The appliances are not old, but they are the same age, so when one house's dishwasher gives up, the neighbours' are usually not far behind.

What we see in the estate

Builder-package dishwashers tend to speak up first, because they run most nights from day one. Around the seven-to-ten-year mark it is typically the drain pump or the spray arms, and a dishwasher that has stopped draining is usually a quick fix once you clear the filter and check the pump. The other common one is the cooktop. A lot of Calderwood kitchens have an induction cooktop, and when a zone stops responding it is worth ruling out the simple causes first, which our induction cooktop notes cover. Pyrolytic ovens throw the odd fault too, usually an element or a door-lock sensor.

Worth a look first

Because these appliances are still young, the fault is often something minor. A dishwasher leaving grit behind usually just needs the filter and the spray-arm jets cleared, not a part. An induction zone that has cut out sometimes only needs the pan recentred or the touch panel wiped dry, since a wet or oversensitive panel reads as a fault. If it turns out to be more than that, we carry the common parts for the estate brands and can usually finish in the one visit.
