Most dishwasher call-outs come down to four complaints: it won't drain, the dishes come out dirty, it leaks, or it won't start at all. The good news is that a fair share of the first two you can sort yourself in ten minutes, and the ones you can't are usually straightforward for a technician to pin down.
Water sitting in the bottom
A puddle left in the base after a cycle is the single most common dishwasher fault we see. The filter in the bottom of the tub is behind the great majority of them. Food, grease, and the odd shard of glass build up over the mesh and choke the drain, and once it is packed the pump can't shift the water.
Pull the bottom rack, lift the filter out, and rinse it under a hot tap with an old toothbrush. While it is out, feel around the sump for anything lodged in the drain. If it still holds water after that, look at the drain hose where it runs to the sink or waste, since a kink or a clogged spigot behind the cabinet stops it just as effectively. When the filter and hose are clear and it still won't empty, the drain pump itself is usually the culprit, and that is our job.
Dishes coming out dirty or filmy
If the machine runs a full cycle but the dishes are gritty, spotted, or still have food on them, start with the spray arms. Lift them off and hold each one up to the light: the tiny jets clog with lime scale and debris, and a blocked arm can't throw water where it needs to. Clear the holes with a toothpick and make sure both arms spin freely without a tall pan blocking them.
After that it is usually one of three things. Rinse aid empty, so glasses dry with streaks. Water not getting hot enough. Or the local hard water leaving a chalky film, which is common through the Illawarra. Running an empty hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner every month keeps the film down. Leaks and refusing to start
A dishwasher that leaks is worth acting on quickly, because water tracks under the cabinet and into the floor before you notice. Leaks come from a perished door seal, a loose or split hose connection, or a cracked sump, and the source is not always where the water shows up. A machine that is dead, or stops partway with a code, is usually a door latch that no longer registers as shut, a control board, or a heater fault. Both of these are where guessing gets expensive, so it is worth having someone who knows the model look at it.

- Hold the spray arms to the light and clear blocked jets.
- Top up the rinse aid and run a hot cleaning cycle.
- Check the drain hose behind the machine for a kink.
