Westinghouse Appliance Repairs

Independent Westinghouse repairs across the Illawarra — ovens and cooktops, fridges, washers and dishwashers, quoted before any work starts.

Servicing all Westinghouse appliances

What we repair

Westinghouse ovens, cooktops, fridges, freezers, washing machines and dishwashers, domestic only — we don't take on commercial kitchen equipment. Wollongong through to Nowra and along the South Coast.

Westinghouse has been in Australian kitchens long enough that a lot of what we see is fifteen to twenty-five years old and still worth fixing. That shapes most of the advice below.

Westinghouse ovens: the four faults worth knowing

Won't heat at all. On a fan-forced model the fan element sits behind the rear baffle plate and does most of the work. A failed element often shows itself — a blister, a bright spot, or a visible break — but not always. Before assuming the element, check whether the oven runs on other functions: if the grill works and fan bake doesn't, that narrows it immediately.

Heats, then fades or overshoots. That's a thermostat or sensor problem far more often than an element. Ovens that cook unevenly, burn one side, or need twenty degrees more than the dial says are in this category. It's a cheap part and a straightforward job on most Westinghouse models.

Trips the safety switch. An element that has gone to earth will trip the RCD the instant the oven is switched on. Leave it off at the wall and book it — this is the one fault on the list you shouldn't keep testing.

Door won't seal or won't shut square. Perished door seals and dropped hinges cost you heat and cooking evenness, and both are inexpensive. Worth doing on an otherwise healthy oven.

Older Westinghouse wall ovens are usually hardwired rather than plugged in, and disconnecting a hardwired appliance is licensed electrical work in NSW. That's a factor when you're weighing repair against replacement, because a new oven brings an electrician's visit with it.

Westinghouse cooktop repairs

We repair Westinghouse ceramic, induction and gas cooktops, on the same visit and the same assessment fee as the ovens. Most cooktop calls come down to one zone or one burner rather than the whole unit, and that is normally a repairable fault.

On a ceramic top a zone that has stopped heating is usually the radiant element or its switch. On induction the pattern to look for is zones that work and then cut out after a few minutes, which points at the control board or a cooling fan clogged with dust rather than the elements. Gas burners that click without lighting are nearly always the ignition electrode, the spark module or a burner cap sitting crooked after a clean, and we run through the checks in a gas cooktop that clicks but won't light.

Cracked or shattered glass is the one to stop using straight away. A crack lets spills reach the elements underneath, and it turns a cooktop repair into a replacement.

Parts on discontinued models

This is the question we get most about Westinghouse, and the answer is better than people expect. Elements, thermostats, thermal cut-outs, door seals and hinges for older models are generally still available — often as a superseded part number that replaces the original. We can usually keep a twenty-year-old oven going.

What genuinely stops a repair is the electronic control or the printed fascia on a discontinued model. When those are gone, they're gone, and we'll say so rather than order something on the chance it fits.

Westinghouse fridges and freezers

The most common call is a fridge section that's warm while the freezer stays cold. On a frost-free model the freezer produces the cold and a fan pushes it through a duct into the fridge, so warm-fridge-cold-freezer nearly always means that air path is interrupted — a failed evaporator fan, or an evaporator iced into a solid block behind the rear freezer panel because the defrost heater or thermostat has stopped cycling.

That's a repairable fault and not a gas problem, which is worth knowing because "it needs regassing" is the diagnosis people expect and it's usually wrong.

Door seals are the other frequent one, and they matter more on this coast: a seal that no longer grips means the compressor runs longer, the evaporator ices faster, and the power bill climbs. Close the door on a sheet of paper — if it slides out without drag, the seal is done.

Westinghouse dishwasher repairs

We repair Westinghouse dishwashers, and the fault list is short. Water left in the base, dishes coming out gritty, and a door that will not latch cover most of what we attend.

Water sitting in the bottom is a drainage problem, and the filter and sump in the base unscrew for cleaning. Doing that clears a fair share of calls before anyone needs to come out, and our guide to a dishwasher that will not drain walks it through. Grit left on the load is usually blocked spray-arm jets or a filter that has never been touched rather than a pump fault, so hold the arms up to the light and check the holes are clear. A machine that fills and drains but never gets the load hot has lost its heating element or thermostat, and that is a part swap, not a new machine.

Westinghouse washing machine and dryer repairs

We repair Westinghouse top and front loaders, and vented and condenser dryers, and we will look at both on the one visit if the laundry has gone down together.

On the washers, a machine that leaves the load sopping wet is more often a drain fault than a spin fault, and the drain pump filter behind the flap at the bottom front is the first thing to clear. Put a towel down first. A washer that will not drain or spin covers the rest of the checks. A drum that grinds or rumbles when you turn it by hand is bearings, and that is the fault most likely to end in a replacement recommendation on an older machine.

On the dryers, a drum that turns while the clothes stay damp is the element or the thermal cut-out, and the cut-out has usually tripped because lint has choked the airflow. Clean the lint filter every load and check the vent hose is not crushed behind the machine, because that is what kills dryer elements early on this coast. A dryer that will not heat has the detail.

Are you a Westinghouse service centre?

No. We are an independent family-owned repairer working across the Illawarra and South Coast, not Westinghouse's service centre and not its authorised agent.

That distinction only bites while an appliance is still covered. If your Westinghouse is inside its manufacturer warranty, go through Westinghouse directly, because bringing in an outside repairer can cost you the cover, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than take the booking. Once the warranty has run out there is nothing left to void and you can use whoever you like. What authorised appliance repair actually means sets out how the warranty and your consumer guarantees differ, because the guarantee often outlasts the warranty.

The other half of what people mean by "Westinghouse fridge service" or "oven service" is worth answering too. There is no scheduled service on a domestic Westinghouse fridge, oven or cooktop the way there is on a gas heater, so a service call here is a repair visit: a technician attends, finds the actual fault and quotes it before touching anything. What makes that visit worth booking on this brand is parts. Elements, thermostats, thermal cut-outs, seals and hinges for twenty-year-old Westinghouse models are generally still available, often under a superseded part number, so a machine most people would write off is usually still repairable.

What it costs and how long it takes

The assessment fee is $125 across the Illawarra and $145 further out on the South Coast. The technician diagnoses the fault and quotes the repair before starting.

Common oven parts — elements, thermostats, seals — are usually stocked or next-day, so most oven jobs finish in one visit. Fridge sealed-system work and electronic controls are the ones more likely to need a return.

When we'll tell you not to bother

  • A discontinued electronic control with no parts left, which is the main reason we condemn a Westinghouse oven.
  • Sealed-system failure on a fridge past about twelve years, where the repair cost lands close to replacement.
  • Cabinet or chassis corrosion on machines kept in unventilated coastal laundries — salt air takes years off appliances here, and it shows up at the earth points and the outer cabinet first.

Book a Westinghouse repair

Call 02 4229 3777 or book a repair online. Have the model number handy — on ovens it's usually on the door frame behind the door, and on fridges on a plate inside the fridge compartment. The model number is what tells us whether the part you need is still made.

Very happy. I rang for service on Tuesday and a visit was arranged for the next day. The man texted me to say he was on the way and arrived soon after. He was able to tell me what he thought was the problem and an estimate of the cost if he were correct. He was right, had the necessary parts in his truck and fixed our machine straight away. Would recommend.

Julie, Donna and the staff from Wollongong Service Company were so professional in helping and advising me of the options to repair a leaking hose in my dishwasher. They finished the job that was originally diagnosed by another party and actually changed all the hoses in my dishwasher for a little more than the price I was quoted to only change 1 hose by the original party (after paying that party a service call fee initially) and did not charge me any service call fee. I would highly recommend Wollongong Service Company to anyone in need of appliance repairs. Their tradesmen were very informative and friendly during the repair also. Thanks to all the staff at Wollongong Service Company, much appreciated.

My local repairer could not come to my house for 2 weeks to look at my washing machine because they were fully booked out and so they said to contact Wollongong Service Company to see if they could look at my machine sooner. So I contacted this company and the very next day someone came out and found the problem with my machine. So a part had to be ordered and within a short period of time my machine was fixed. This company is excellent to deal with and the repairer (Jye) was so nice and respectful of my house. I will most certainly be calling this company again if I have any appliance problems in the future and I can't thank them enough for all of their help. I am so happy!
