A cooktop takes more punishment than almost anything else in the kitchen, and it hides three very different technologies under one benchtop. What goes wrong, and what you can safely poke at yourself, depends a lot on whether you have gas, electric, or induction. Here is how the common faults break down.
Gas burners that click but won't light
This is the call we get most often on gas. A burner sparks over and over but never catches, and people assume the ignition has failed. Usually the spark is fine and something simpler is in the way.
Nine times out of ten it is a burner cap sitting slightly off its seat, or the ignition electrode and burner ports clogged with boiled-over food and grease. Once everything is cold, lift the cap and burner ring off, clear the little ports with a pin or a stiff brush, dry it all, and sit the cap back down square. That fixes a lot of them.
If one burner keeps clicking even when every knob is off, moisture has usually crept into the switch or the spark module, and that is where you stop and call. Gas work is carried out by appropriately licensed technicians. If you can smell gas at any point, shut it off at the isolation valve and ring us before touching anything else.
Electric and ceramic elements that stay cold
Solid electric hotplates and the radiant elements under a ceramic glass top fail in fairly predictable ways. One zone dead while the rest work usually means a burnt-out element or a failed infinite switch, which is the control that pulses the element on and off to hold a temperature. On a ceramic top, a zone that only ever gets warm, or that cycles at odd times, points more often at that switch than the element itself.
A cracked glass surface is different. The element sits directly beneath it, so switch the cooktop off at the wall and leave it off until the glass is replaced.
Induction zones and error codes
Induction is the fussiest to read because it talks back in codes. An E0 or the equivalent almost always just means the pan is not being detected. The base has to be ferrous, so a fridge magnet should grab it, and it needs to roughly cover the zone. A small milk pan on a big zone often reads as empty.
Overheat codes mean the cooktop has shut a zone down to protect itself, usually after the cooling vents underneath were blocked or a pot boiled dry. Let it cool and it should clear. If the codes keep returning with the right cookware, or a zone drops power on its own, the fault is on the power board or a coil underneath, and that only comes apart on the bench. Safe checks before you book
- Clean and reseat gas burner caps and rings once they are cold.
- Check induction cookware is magnetic and sized to the zone.
- Give an overheated induction zone time to cool, then try again.
- Confirm the whole cooktop, not one zone, has power at the switchboard.
When to leave it to us
Anything behind the glass or inside the control panel is where the do-it-yourself part ends: infinite switches, elements, induction power boards, gas valves, and spark modules all sit under mains voltage or gas. You pay a fixed fee for the assessment, $125 in the Illawarra or $145 for the far South Coast, then get a quote before any repair starts. Repairs carry a warranty, same-day service is often available, and Afterpay is fine. We cover the coast from Helensburgh down through Wollongong and Shellharbour to Nowra.
