What fails in a family dishwasher
A dishwasher run every night does about 365 cycles a year, and the parts that work every cycle wear first. The drain pump pushes out food scraps every time, so a bit of glass or a fruit sticker can jam it. The door latch takes a knock every time the door closes. The heating element sits in water and slowly scales up.
New homes in the estates around West Dapto mostly have integrated or semi-integrated machines, while the older houses often have a freestanding unit under a bench. The faults are the same on both. Integrated machines are a little slower to get at because of the panel and kickboard, but they are still repaired in place.
Not drying
A machine that cleans well but leaves everything wet may just be low on rinse aid, which helps water run off. Plastic always comes out wetter than glass and china. If the rinse aid is full and the load is still soaked, the heater, the fan on condensation-dry models or the vent is the next thing to check, and that is our end of the job.
Leaks and the kickboard
A dishwasher that leaks usually shows it at the kickboard first: a damp edge, a swollen board or a stain on the floor in front. The leak may come from the door seal, a hose behind the kickboard or the sump at the base. Some machines have a tray and float switch underneath that shuts the machine down and shows an error when water collects there. Do not keep resetting it. Turn off the tap under the sink and book a repair.
