Wollongong proper is where we do more apartment and unit work than anywhere else we cover. The city centre and the streets around the Crown Street mall are dense with unit blocks, older red-brick walk-ups and newer towers, and the 2500 postcode has the deepest apartment market on the coast. What breaks in a unit, and why

Apartment laundries are small, so the machines are small. Stacked washer and dryer sets and slimline European front-loaders are everywhere, and the fault we see most is a blocked drain pump filter: coins, hair clips and lint pack it out until the machine will not drain or spin. In older blocks with a shared laundry, the dryers run almost constantly and cop lint build-up that kills airflow and eventually the heater.

Renovated units tend to hide the dishwasher behind a cabinet door. Integrated machines are awkward to pull out, which is exactly why people leave a fault too long. We come to you and work on it in place.

The older walk-ups still have their original ovens and cooktops. A tired oven element or a cooktop that will not spark is routine on a Westinghouse or Electrolux that has been in the kitchen for twenty years.

Small kitchens, hard-working appliances

CBD kitchens are compact and the rangehood sits right over the cooktop, so grease-clogged filters and a fan that has stopped pulling are common. Microwaves that have quit heating are another regular, and it is usually the door interlock or a blown thermal fuse rather than the whole unit.
