What breaks in a unit, and why
Apartment laundries are small, so the machines are small. Stacked washer and dryer sets and slimline European front-loaders are everywhere, and the fault we see most is a blocked drain pump filter: coins, hair clips and lint pack it out until the machine will not drain or spin. In older blocks with a shared laundry, the dryers run almost constantly and cop lint build-up that kills airflow and eventually the heater.
Renovated units tend to hide the dishwasher behind a cabinet door. Integrated machines are awkward to pull out, which is exactly why people leave a fault too long. We come to you and work on it in place.
The older walk-ups still have their original ovens and cooktops. A tired oven element or a cooktop that will not spark is routine on a Westinghouse or Electrolux that has been in the kitchen for twenty years.
Small kitchens, hard-working appliances
CBD kitchens are compact and the rangehood sits right over the cooktop, so grease-clogged filters and a fan that has stopped pulling are common. Microwaves that have quit heating are another regular, and it is usually the door interlock or a blown thermal fuse rather than the whole unit.

A big part of Wollongong work is rental. Managing agents call us when a tenant reports a dead fridge or a washer that has stopped, we quote the job, and they decide repair or replace with a real number in front of them. A fridge section going warm while the freezer stays cold is the classic frost-free fault, and it is almost never a gas problem: the freezer makes the cold and a fan pushes it through, so a dead evaporator fan or an iced-up evaporator behind the freezer panel stops the air rather than the cooling. A fridge that is not cooling while the freezer works goes through it.
Before you book, pull the fridge out and look at the coils on the back. Furred with dust means the compressor is running flat out and still losing ground, and a clean often brings it back on its own. Door seals are the other one worth checking: shut the door on a sheet of paper, and if it pulls out without any drag the seal is done.

A drum that turns while the clothes stay damp is the heating element or the thermal cut-out, and the cut-out has almost always tripped because lint choked the airflow rather than because anything failed on its own. Clean the lint filter every load and make sure the vent hose behind the machine is not crushed flat against the wall, which is what kills elements early. A dryer that will not heat covers the checks.
