Fridge faults we get called to in the city
Most fridge calls in Wollongong come from units and townhouses, where the fridge is built into a cavity that was measured for an older, smaller model. A modern fridge pushed into that space has no room to breathe, so the coils run hot, the compressor barely stops and the fresh food section creeps above 5 degrees on a warm afternoon. Moving it forward a few centimetres sometimes fixes it. When it does not, the condenser fan or a dusty coil is usually the reason, and both are quick repairs.
The other regular is a frost-free fridge with a cold freezer and a warm fridge section. The freezer is where the cold is made, and a fan blows it through a duct into the fridge. If the fan fails or the coil behind the freezer panel ices over, that air stops moving. The fix is a fan motor or a defrost part, done in your kitchen.
Share houses near the university and the hospital tend to have a second fridge in the laundry or on a back verandah. Those fridges sit in the heat and collect dust, and they are the ones we most often find with a seized fan or a split door seal.
What to tell us when you ring
Give us the brand and model number from the sticker inside the door, and say whether the freezer is still cold. If you are in a block with a security door or limited parking, tell us how the technician gets in. That saves time on the day and keeps the assessment to the $125 fee.
What a fridge repair costs here
A small job that needs only a cheap part comes to the assessment plus that part, around $60. The bigger fridge repairs come to roughly $500 to $600 all up. Work on the sealed gas system is a separate licensed trade. If that is the fault, we say so at the assessment and you have spent $125, not the price of a new fridge.
