Haywards Bay is a newer estate tucked in beside Lake Illawarra, just south of Dapto and a turn off the freeway. It is a small suburb, built out over the last decade or so, and the lots have essentially all sold. That makes it young-family territory, with homes and appliances of much the same vintage.
Like any estate that went up in a short window, the appliances here hit their milestones together rather than one at a time.
What we get called for
In a house full of kids the washing machine never stops, and it is our most common Haywards Bay call. Front-loaders take the brunt, and it is usually the drain pump filter clogged with the debris of family life, or a door seal that has started to weep. A washer that will not drain or spin is the classic, and often a ten-minute job at the filter.
The dishwasher is close behind, run every night and prone to a clogged filter or blocked spray arms that leave the dishes gritty. Our notes on a dishwasher that is not cleaning properly cover the checks worth doing before you call.
Dryers come into their own through a wet Illawarra winter, and a dryer that spins without heat is usually a thermal fuse or an element, both replaceable.
What to try first
A few of these you can head off yourself. On the washer, clear the drain pump filter behind the bottom flap, where hair clips, coins and the odd sock end up in a busy family laundry. On the dishwasher, lift out the filter in the base and rinse it, then check the spray arms spin freely and their holes are not blocked. On the dryer, empty the lint filter every load and make sure the vent is clear, because a choked vent is the most common reason one runs warm but never quite dries. If the basics are covered and it still will not behave, book us in.
