Gerroa is tiny. It is the village at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, where the Crooked River comes out to the sea, and it is mostly holiday houses and a scatter of permanent homes above the dunes. The Seven Mile Beach caravan park and a wall of rental listings tell the story: for a lot of these places the appliances only really work during school holidays and long weekends.

What goes wrong in a holiday house

Sand and salt do the rest. Both find their way into the works, and the exposed metal on anything with an outdoor vent corrodes faster this close to the water.

If you manage a rental here, the cheapest thing you can do is run each machine once before a booking rather than discovering the fault when the guests do. A washing machine that has sat idle for weeks will sometimes refuse to drain on the first load because the pump has gummed up, which is a quick fix if it is caught before a changeover instead of during one.
