Cringila sits right on the doorstep of the steelworks, about four kilometres south of Wollongong. It grew up as a migrant housing area for steel and mine workers and was once known as Steeltown, and that history still shows in the streets: modest, well-lived-in homes, a good number of them rentals, and kitchens that have fed big families for decades.

What breaks, and why

A lot of the machines here have years on them, and that is fine, they just need looking after. The washing machine is usually the hardest-worked appliance in the house, and the faults we see most are a clogged drain pump filter, worn drum bearings and a perished door seal. A machine that stops mid-cycle is more often a cheap part than a new washer.

If yours has stopped draining, there is one thing worth trying first. Front-loaders have a small filter behind a flap at the bottom front of the machine. Put a towel and a shallow tray down, unscrew it, and clear out the lint, coins and hair clips that collect there. That single check fixes a fair few of the calls we get. Ovens cop a hiding in a house that cooks properly every night. Elements burn out and thermostats drift, and both are straightforward fixes that get the kitchen back before dinner. Older fridges tend to fail on the door seal or the condenser coils, and a fridge that runs constantly yet still feels warm is usually one of those two things.
